207 WILLELMUS ALVERNENSIS 184; 166.h.1

Mid 15th cent. 306 ff. 18 ½ x 12 ¾ in. 2 cols, of 58-59 lines, with very wide margins. Quires of 8 leaves (except xxx4), with signatures and catchwords; the first leaf, and blanks after 47 and 272, cut out. Same hand and ornament as MS 174, with running titles but no headings; the lost first leaf had a border with a large shield of Gray's arms at foot, as appears from the offset on 1v.

  • 2- 199v. (1) [willelmus alvernensis op, De Universo, beg. imperfect with Ia Iae, Book i, c. 3] Revertar igitur nunc iuxta promissum ad destruendam istam vanissimam falsitatem—deo attribuas cum actionibus graciarum Amen. Explicit.

For other MSS and editions of this see Glorieux i, no. 141 w (add, besides this copy, Cambridge Univ. Lib. Add. 6171 and Oxford BL Lat. th. c. 17). Ia Iae Books ii and iii begin on 14 (no initial) and 31v; at end is Conpletus est tractatus s'i primi sapiencialis ac divinalis magisterii pars prima. IIa Iae and IIIa Ia are omitted. Ia IIae begins on 48; at end is Explicit liber primus de universo spirituali. Incipit liber secundus. IIa IIae on 69, divided into two books on 115v, at c. 77 of the edition, with Explicit liber primus de universo etc. as before, but with continuous chapter-numbering; at end is Sequitur liber tertius. IIIa IIae on 165v. The running title Secunda Pars continues right through. Chapter-division differs somewhat from that of the Venice edition of 1591, and about ff. 71-82 there appears to be some dislocation. 201

  • 200-16v. (2) [idem, De Bono et Malo] Quoniam in nonodecimo Mt. et xviii Luce dicit et ipsa Veritas—affluencior et numerosior. Cited as B in the edition by J. R. O'Donnell; see MS 287.

    • Both here and in MS 287, the title 'De bono et malo' seems intended to cover this and the preceding together; the running title is actually de Bo. in art. 2 and de Ma. in art. 3. 'De paupertate' is due to N. Valois.
  • 236-55. (4) [AEGIDIUS ROMANUS OESA, De Exemptionibus] Incipiunt capitula operis sequentis contra exempciones (list of 26 chapters). Augustinus 7o de ci. dei c° 30 ait quod deus sic itaque administrat omnia—quod exempti delinquendo quantum ad ea que sunt.
